National Biodiversity Assessment

The National Biodiversity Assessment (NBA) is a collaborative effort to synthesise the best available science on South Africa’s biodiversity to inform policy, support decision-making across multiple sectors, and contribute to national development priorities.

The NBA is the primary tool for monitoring and reporting on the state of biodiversity in South Africa, and is produced by the South African National Biodiversity Institute as part of its mandate under the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act (Act 10 of 2004), in partnership with numerous institutions and individuals.

The National Biodiversity Assessment 2025 takes two forms

A book - National Biodiversity Assessment 2025: The status of South Africa’s biodiversity. Summary of Findings and Key Messages - published in hard copy and available in digital form, and this website - which presents the content of the book together with more in depth analyses and statistics for terrestrial, freshwater, estuarine and marine realms, as well as the coastal zone and South Africa’s subantarctic territory. Detailed findings are also presented for all taxonomic groups with national Red List assessments and for genetic diversity.
